The Greater Waterbury YMCA has three amazing ways to help teens and young adults get hired, trained, and thriving this summer.
🛟 1. Become a Lifeguard
Train to save lives and earn a paycheck.
Our American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course will teach you Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED — all in one.
- Class Starts: April 29, 2025 (Tues & Thurs, 4:00–8:00 PM)
- Ages: 15+
- Cost: $350 YMCA Members | $400 Non-Members
- Register: Online or at our Front Desk
- 🎯 Bonus: Once you're certified, you’re eligible to apply for summer lifeguard positions at the Y!
Perfect for high school students looking for summer jobs with flexibility, impact, and leadership skills.
🏕 2. Work at YMCA Summer Camp
Spend your summer outdoors making a difference!
We're hiring for Camp Counselors, Junior Counselors, Lifeguards, Maintenance and Activity Leaders to join our camp team.
- Ages: 16+
- Perks: Leadership experience, fun environment, and free summer memories!

Summer camp jobs at the Y are a great fit for future educators, coaches, or anyone who enjoys working with kids!
📝 3. Apply for the State of CT Summer Youth Employment Program
Earn job experience and a paycheck with a little help from the State of CT!
In partnership with the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board (NRWIB), teens can apply now for paid summer jobs through the Summer Youth Employment Program (CYEP).
- Ages: 14–21
- Deadline to Apply: May 31, 2025
- Job Types: Camp support, lifeguard aides, facilities, admin & more

This is a great way for youth to build resumes, earn money, and get valuable work experience with trusted community partners.

Q: Is the YMCA lifeguard certification accepted everywhere?
Yes! The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is nationally recognized and valid for two years.
Q: Can I apply for a job at the Y after completing the training?
Absolutely. If you are 16+ Certified lifeguards are encouraged to apply for open positions at the YMCA or other local pools.
Q: What if I’ve never had a job before?
No problem! All of these positions are beginner-friendly. The YMCA and CYEP are perfect first-job experiences for teens.
