School Readiness Program:

The YMCA School Readiness program provides a safe and nurturing environment while promoting the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development appropriate to each child's age and development.

Our NAEYC Accredited, state licensed program provides a safe and healthy environment for your child and peace of mind for you!

Full day:

 

Who: Children ages 3-4
When: Monday - Friday 6:30am - 5:30pm
Criteria: Must live in Waterbury and must attend at least 6 hours per day.
Fees: Based upon a sliding fee scale depending upon income and family size

The Before and After School enrichment programs offer school-aged children a flexible daily schedule that includes:

  • Physical activity, instituted according to the Sports Play & Active Recreation curriculum
  • Problem Solving and Creative Experiences, based on the YMCA Core Values: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility
  • Nutritional plan guided by the State of CT Child & Adult Care Food Program

Youth & Teen Programs


The Greater Waterbury YMCA Youth & Teen program is based on the foundation of teaching children the importance of YMCA core values: honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. Each program provides learning, leadership and friendship opportunities for the youth and teens in our community.

Buddies and Pee Wee Sports Spectacular: These are 7-week instructional programs for boys and girls ages 3 & 4-5 respectively.  They are designed to introduce and teach the basic rules and fundamentals of multiple sports, some sessions include soccer, t-ball, hockey, kickball, golf, and/or obstacle course challenges.  All participants receive a t-shirt and a medal upon completion.

Buddies, Pee Wee, & Rookies Basketball:  These are 7-week instructional programs for boys and girls ages 3, 4-5, & 6-7 years old respectively.  They are designed to teach the basic rules and fundamentals of the game.  Players will practice dribbling, passing, shooting, learn the rules of the game, and most of all…have FUN! Sessions are held at the YMCA on Saturday mornings.  All participants receive a t-shirt and medal.

Game Time Hoops (8-10 yrs. & 11-13 yrs): These 2 leagues are designed for players of each age bracket 8-10 year olds and 11-13 year olds, who have some experience with the game of basketball, and would benefit from a league that plays games as well as holds instructional practices.  There is a player evaluation held by the coaches to determine teams.  This league runs on Saturdays for 7 weeks, and everyone makes a team.  At the conclusion of the league, all participants receive a medal, and the champions receive trophies.

Youth Volleyball (Girls and Boys grades 5-8): This 7-week instructional program is for players who may be beginners or have had some middle school playing experience. The emphasis of this program is to develop and build on the fundamental skills of passing, setting, attacking, serving, individual defense and learning about court play.  Focus will be on individual skill development that will be incorporated into game-like drills.  All participants with receive a t-shirt and a medal upon completion.

Dance Movement Classes: Presented at the Y in Partnership with Connecticut Dance Theatre.  Boys and Girls ages 3-7 and 8-12 will have separate classes so the classes can be more specifically tailored to the interests of boys and girls.  The class is a beginner class for children to learn about dance, including the basics of ballet, hip-hop, dance fitness, and self-expression through movement.

Private Sports Instruction: The Y is now offering private basketball and volleyball instruction for individuals, pair of players, or small groups.  This is a comprehensive instruction is packaged as four, or six lesions that focus on a variety of skills.  Instruction is provide by highly qualified coaches for all ages.

Leadership and Jr. Leadership Programs: A program designed for high school and middle school students.

Youth & Teen Wellness Center


The Youth & Teen Wellness Center is full of interactive cardio equipment targeted to middle-school age kids – but it’s fun for older kids and adults too!  Besides the standard treadmills and expresso bikes, we’ve got cardio videogaming with Wiis and Xboxes, a Dance Dance Revolution, and a treadwall – a climbing wall which rotates like a treadmill, so you could climb all day if you wanted to!

YMCA Camp Mataucha and YMCA Camp Oakasha

The Greater Waterbury YMCA is proud to offer two day camps that are unmatched in customer service, the quality of programs, and most importantly caring and professional staff. Our staff inspire campers to learn and demonstrate positive values such as caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility through positive role modeling and recognizing important "teachable moments". Serving children ages 5 to 15 years of age, everyday is a safe new adventure specifically tailored towards the age of your camper. With activities such as archery, swimming, arts & crafts, boating, field games, nature, hiking, family nights, overnights and more, camp is sure to be a fun memorable experience.

YMCA ChildWatch-free babysitting while you work out.

We offer a fun and stimulating environment for your 6 month old - 12 year old while you work out. Age-appropriate play areas and 2-3 caregivers at all times.

ChildWatch features the Wii interactive gaming system, computers & homework stations, art & craft area, infant/toddler zone, and parent pagers.

Free ChildWatch is for YMCA full facility members only, parents must remain in building at all times.

Older children have the option of using the new Youth and Teen Health and Wellness Center for ChildWatch.  The hours for the new center are:

5:00 PM -7:00 PM  Monday-Thursday

The new center features an interactive gaming Exercade with age-appropriate cardio equipment, Wii games and more. Parents will need to sign children into the center and sign them out.

IMPORTANT Policy and information

  • ChildWatch is available to full YMCA Facility members only.  Program members or Unlimited Fitness members may not use ChildWatch
  • Members may not use ChildWatch for children that are not under their legal guardianship
  • Parents are the only people allowed to check children into ChildWatch, ChildWatch is not open to members caring for someone else's children.
  • The same parent must sign each child in and out daily
  • If pagers are lost or broken a $50 fee will be charged to the member
  • ChildWatch has a 1.5 hour time limit, if pages are not answered promptly parents will be charged a late fee
  • Children that are visibly ill will not be allowed in ChildWatch

Good to know...
Parents may leave children in ChildWatch for a maximum of 2 hours daily, 1.5 hours if there is a waiting list. If there is a wait list and your child has been checked in for 1.5 hours, you will be paged to pick your child up. It is recommended that new children have some transition time with a parent in ChildWatch before the parent leaves for the first time. Please pick up a parent handbook, child registration form and parent newsletter on your first visit!

Important Information:
Caregivers do not change diapers in Childwatch, please make sure that your child is checked in wearing a clean diaper. No food, snacks or drinks are allowed, if your child is thirsty a caregiver may provide he/she with water. There is a diaper changing station and child bathroom for parent convenience located in the Childwatch room as well as 2 handwashing sinks. There are no nap areas/beds in ChildWatch, if your baby may get tired please leave a carseat or reclining stroller for he/she to nap in.  Parents will be held responsible for broken toys and lost or broken parent pagers.

Aquatics


Learning to swim at the YMCA is an exciting and enjoyable process! Here are a few pointers for you to know when you or your child begins swim classes: Be patient and supportive. Swimming develops new motor skills, and the time needed to learn these skills varies from person to person. Generally, it takes 3 consecutive sessions to progress to a new level. Time is required to develop strength and endurance to perform these skills. Swimmers develop as these skills are reinforced. Our Aquatics program meets the need for a comprehensive program of water enrichment and skill development. Our enthusiastic staff, low ratios, and progressive program will ensure your child’s experience is fun and rewarding.

Youth Swim Programs

Skippers
Read the descriptions below to determine which program best suits your child.

  • Shrimp & Kipper (water exploration )
    6 months & 2 years old with a parent
    The S.K.I.P. classes provide a fun time for parents and other adults to interact
  • Inias & Perch (water exploration )
    2 & 3 years old with a parent
    The S.K.I.P. classes provide a fun time for parents and other adults to interact.
  • Pike I (water exploration )
    3-6 years old without parent
    This class is designed for children who do not feel comfortable putting their face in the water or are afraid of the water.
  • Pike II (primary skills)
    3-6 years old without parent
    This class is designed for children who are not afraid of the water but do not know how to swim. Children should feel comfortable swimming without a flotation device the width of the pool.
  • Eels (primary skills)
    3-5 years old without parent
    Children have the ability to swim the width of the pool with face in the water with and without using a flotation device. Prerequisite: Pike or equivalent.
  • Rays (stroke readiness)
    3-6 years old without parent
    Children have the ability to swim front crawl with rhythmic breathing and back stroke the width of the pool. Prerequisite: Eels or equivalent.
  • Starfish (stroke development)
    4-6 years old without parent
    Children must swim the length of the pool with rotary breathing and back stroke. Prerequisite: Rays or equivalent.

Progressive Swim Programs
These programs are for children ages 6-14 years old.

  • Polliwog I (primary skills)
    For children who cannot swim and for those who are afraid of the water. Water basics. Prerequisite: None.
  • Polliwog II (primary skills)
    For children who can swim the width of the pool with rhythmic breathing, back float for 10 seconds, front float and kick with straight legs. Water basics. Prerequisite: Polliwog I or equivalent.
  • Guppy (stroke readiness)
    Swim 25 yards with rotary breathing and coordinated arms. Back skull, treading water, and basic lifesaving skills. Prerequisite: Polliwog or equivalent.
  • Minnow (stroke development)
    Front dive, survival float, and throwing assists, front crawl, backstroke, and elementary backstroke 50 yards. Prerequisite: Guppy or equivalent.
  • Fish (skill proficiency)
    200 yards front crawl and backstroke and dolphin kick, backstroke turn, 30 feet underwater swim. Prerequisite: Minnow or equivalent.
  • Flying fish (advanced skills)
    100 yards I.M. with legal turns and 200 yards front crawl with flip turns. Tread water for 2 minutes. Prerequisite: Fish or equivalent.
  • Shark (advanced skills)
    200 yards I.M. with legal turns, lifesaving strokes. Prerequisite: Flying Fish or equivalent.

Red Cross Lifeguarding Class
This class is taught over an eleven week period. All classes are mandatory. Participants must be at least 15 years old on the first day of class.4

Prerequisite are

Participants must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, using each of the following strokes for at least 100 yards:
Freestyle (front crawl)
Breaststroke
100 yards choice between the 2

Starting in the water swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound weight, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 min and 40 seconds.


Adult Swim Programs

Water Exercise
A low impact, warm water workout for any fitness level. Designed to be comfortable, invigorating, and easy on your joints. This class improves strength, flexibility, and endurance to improve movement.

Aquacize
Stretch, tone, and strengthen muscles by using water resistance. This program consists of exercises that increase the range of motion in the shoulders, wrists, hips, knees, lower extremities, and abdominal areas.

Water Workout
A workout class that will use the water to make movement easier. Class will include a variety of exercises to build cardio, strength, and overall wellness.

Zumba Splash
This basic level Zumba class is taught in the small pool. Zumba dance is a fusion of Latin and international music, incorporating aerobics and interval training.

Swimming Lesson for the Terrified!
For adults who are truly terrified of the water. A must for parents who want to play in the water with their children, but can't because of their own limitations. Includes water orientation, basic front crawl skills with rhythmic breathing, and safety skills.

Beginning Swimmers
For adults who are unable to swim or only have a basic swimming ability. The class includes basic front crawl and rhythmic breathing skills backstroke skills, and safety skills.

Female Swimming
Adult lap swimming in a closed environment. Monday and Wednesday from 7:15 PM - 8:15 PM in our small pool.

MASTER’S SWIM PROGRAM

Whether you are a novice or an elite swimmer, the Greater Waterbury YMCA’s Masters Swim program can improve your swimming skills. Masters Swimming is the perfect place to rekindle your competitive spirit, try a new sport or simply stay fit while honing a new skill.All of our practices will be conducted like a swim team practice and will have an attentive coach overseeing them; offering a fitness and technical component.  These coached sessions are designed to enhance your swimming skills, make you more efficient in the water, and increase your overall fitness level. Masters Swimming is made up of triathletes, beginners, and elite swimmers.  Come see how much more there is to get out of a workout when surrounded by a group who shares a passion for the water!

Barracudas Swim Team


The Greater Waterbury YMCA Barracuda Swim Team is a competitive swim program offering development, training, and competition to swimmers age 6 and up. The philosophy of our program is "Everybody swims, everybody wins." Every swimmer is given the attention and the opportunity needed to achieve personal improvement.

Practice sessions are divided into three groups, based on a combination of age and experience:

  • Beginners
    Swimmers 8 and under, and first-time swimmers from 9-11. The focus is on the development of each of the four competitive strokes and meet skills (starts and turns). Swimmers practice 4 hours per week.
  • Intermediates
    Swimmers age 8-12, and first-time swimmers from 12 and up. The focus is on the fine-tuning of meet skills, developing good training habits, goal setting, and team work. Swimmers practice 5-6 hours per week.
  • Advanced
    Swimmers age 10 and over who are ready to train for a high level of competition. The emphasis is on conditioning and meet strategy, as well as setting goals and contributing to the team. Swimmers practice 7 hours or more per week.

The team is open to novice swimmers as well as those with prior competitive experience.

8 & under
Ability to swim 2 laps non stop 1 of freestyle with rotary breathing, and an additional lap of freestyle. Ability to swim 1 lap of backstroke non stop and do a kneeling dive off side of pool.

9 & 10
Ability to swim 2 laps non stop of freestyle with rotary breathing. Ability to swim 2 laps of backstroke non stop. Basic knowledge of breaststroke and butterfly. Basic forward flip in the water and a standing dive off side of pool.

11 & 12
Ability to swim 4 laps non stop of freestyle with rotary breathing. Ability to swim 2 laps of backstroke non stop. Ability to swim 2 laps either breaststroke or butterfly. Flip turns and racing start.

13 & over
Ability to swim 4 laps non stop of freestyle with rotary breathing. Ability to swim 4 laps of backstroke non stop. Ability to swim 2 laps both breaststroke or butterfly. Flip turns and racing start.

The team participates in the Yankee Cluster Swim League with ten other YMCA swim teams, including Ansonia, Meriden, Southington, Torrington, and Wallingford. The season consists of 10 dual meets and the League Championship Meet, which is open to every member of the team. There are also New England and National YMCA Championships at the end of the season for swimmers who attain the qualifying times.
